Irish Need Not Apply…
My sister actually purchased this poster when we visited the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side in NYC. She was a Choate Rosemary Hall, UPenn undergrad, Harvard Business School MBA- working for Goldman Sachs, Carlyle Group, Citadel, just to name a few… and her attitude was ‘Yeah we need not apply, you just better hire us’… I sometimes lack my sister’s confidence and at other times I have way too much of it. One of those times is right now (she tends to be more effective). So while I also was a Choate Rosemary Hall grad and UPenn undergrad- I unlike most kids was WAY in to liberal arts. I was a dual major in both Spanish and Anthropology- and while the Econ nerds like my sister made fun of me (1. Guys it’s not that brilliant or unique 2. I know more about the stock market than probably you do- look at this confidence! Also, know way more interesting things about history). But here is why this is all important:
Right now there is a crisis on college campuses across the United States. There is a misunderstanding between the difference of ‘Free Speech’ and ‘Hate Speech’. Anthropology is the study of man in a group- it differs from Psychology because that is the study of the individual brain. Right now, we have the equivalent of mob mentality on college campuses and nothing is being done about it. The question is: who is going to fix it… And I don’t mean to get all Irish about it- but it is not removing a Chairman of the Board at UPenn… it’s letting these kids know that their behavior is unacceptable and the Head of School should send a message by expelling them all (Trust me, a ton of other kids will pay the insane amount of tuition and not be committing hate crimes- the acceptance rate is highly competitive).
My Dad’s best friend from the Naval Academy had to recruit on the Harvard Campus for the Vietnam war. The guy was from Southie, and again, the war was not his idea. He was just doing his job as a Naval Officer- and I think we can all agree the war was not the best decision ever made by the U.S. Government (but Kennedy had this huge inferiority complex, and it stems from his childhood). But did Kevin Conners need to be hurled bottles at? Now Harvard doesn’t allow recruitment- but rallies to hurt Jewish people are ok? I am sorry- but when these kids can actually explain to me the history of their hate- then maybe I will listen. But I am pretty sure they can’t because they are skipping class to create hate crimes.
