FLOSSI GOES WITH THE FLOW, OF LAVA

As of current estimates, there are approximately 1,350 potentially active volcanoes on Earth, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. This number includes volcanoes that have erupted in the Holocene period (the last 11,700 years), are currently erupting, or have the potential to explode. However, the exact count can vary depending on how "active" is defined—some sources, like the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program, focus on volcanoes with confirmed eruptions in historical time, numbering around 500 to 600.

Only a tiny fraction of these are actively erupting at any given moment. According to the most recent data from the Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report (as of late February 2025), there are typically around 40–50 volcanoes in a state of ongoing eruption worldwide, with about 20 erupting on any particular day. This number fluctuates as eruptions begin and end.

Here’s a rundown of where volcanoes are erupting right now:

Kīlauea (Hawaii, USA)
Location: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Big Island, Hawaii (19.421° N, 155.287° W)
Status: Erupting as of March 4–5, 2025. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reports that the summit eruption within Halemaʻumaʻu crater (part of the Kaluapele caldera) is ongoing. This is the 12th eruptive episode since December 23, 2024, with lava fountains and flows confined to the crater.

Etna (Sicily, Italy)
Location: Eastern Sicily (37.751° N, 14.993° E)
Status: It has been intermittently erupting. The most recent significant activity was reported on February 22–26, 2025, with lava flows from the Southeast Crater, confirmed by thermal satellite data from ESA Sentinel-2. While it may not be erupting now, its ongoing activity since early February qualifies it as a currently active volcano with recent eruptions.

Kanlaon (Philippines)
Location: Negros Island, Central Philippines (10.412° N, 123.132° E)
Status: Erupting as of late February 2025. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported continuing activity through February 24, with ash emissions (e.g., a 300-meter plume on February 22) and elevated sulfur dioxide levels (up to 6,534 tonnes/day). A Volcanic Ash Advisory from Tokyo VAAC on February 28 noted an eruption, suggesting activity persists into early March.

Dukono (Indonesia)
Location: Halmahera Island, North Maluku (1.693° N, 127.894° E)
Status: Erupting continuously. Indonesia’s PVMBG reported ongoing activity through February 25, 2025, with ash plumes reaching 2 km above the crater rim. This volcano has been in a near-constant state of eruption for years, and there’s no indication it’s stopped as of today.

Great Sitkin (Alaska, USA)
Location: Aleutian Islands (52.077° N, 176.111° W)
Status: Erupting with slow lava effusion. The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) confirmed on February 21, 2025, that lava continues to feed a thick flow in the summit crater, advancing along the northern margin. Small daily earthquakes suggest ongoing activity into early March.

Sheveluch (Kamchatka, Russia)
Location: Kamchatka Peninsula (56.653° N, 161.360° E)
Status: Likely erupting. The Kamchatkan Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) reported lava extrusion at the “300 years of RAS” dome and Young Sheveluch dome through February 13, 2025, with thermal anomalies in satellite imagery. This volcano’s persistent activity suggests it’s still erupting as of now.

Taal (Philippines)
Location: Luzon, near Manila (14.010° N, 120.998° E)
Status: Minor eruptive activity. PHIVOLCS reported phreatic (steam-driven) eruptions on February 12, 15, and 16, 2025, lasting 3–4 minutes each, with plumes up to 2.1 km high. While not in a major eruption, its recent activity and unrest indicate it’s still active.

Lewotobi (Indonesia)
Location: Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara (8.542° S, 122.775° E)
Status: Erupting as of February 28, 2025. The Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) reported ash plumes up to 9,000 feet (2,700 meters), with explosive activity continuing. This aligns with its pattern of frequent eruptions.

Popocatépetl (Mexico)
Location: Central Mexico, near Mexico City (19.023° N, 98.622° W)
Status: Intermittently erupting. The Washington VAAC reported occasional volcanic ash emissions on February 27, 2025, consistent with its ongoing low-level activity.

Reventador (Ecuador)
Location: Andes Mountains (0.077° S, 77.656° W)
Status: Erupting continuously. The Washington VAAC noted ash plumes up to 14,000 feet (4,300 meters) on February 25, 2025, with explosive activity persisting.
