The first known organized diving competition took place in Sweden in 1871. It involved participants diving from a platform into the water, and the event was a precursor to modern competitive diving.

Diving as a sport continued to evolve, and by the early 20th century, it gained more formal recognition. The first Olympic diving competitions were held during the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, USA, featuring men's platform diving. Women’s diving events were introduced later, with the first women's platform event debuting at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden.
